NEWS: Congressman Greg Casar Says Senate Border “Deal” Would Make Our Situation Worse

WASHINGTON – Today, Congressman Greg Casar (D-Texas) released the following statement after reviewing the immigration “deal” from the U.S. Senate:
“Everyone agrees we should do something to improve conditions at the border. But this bill would make the current situation worse and more chaotic, instead of reforming our system to be more safe, orderly, and humane,” said Congressman Greg Casar (D-Texas). “As Democrats, we cannot accept Trump-era policies that hurt people, hurt our economy, and hurt the asylum process.
“If Senators actually want to reduce mass migration, we need to address the root causes and work with our global partners in Latin America to find long-term, compassionate solutions to the instability driving people out of their homes.”
The current immigration “deal” would:
- Strengthen cartels and increase chaos at the border through unpredictable border closures and expulsions.
- Force the United States to close its doors to asylum seekers by creating a new authority to turn away or expel them away without due process.
- Increase the number of unjust removals by creating a rushed process with heightened standards for people seeking asylum, with no judicial oversight.
- Enrich private prison companies and punish asylum seekers by providing record-breaking funding for immigration detention.
- Fund Trump’s border wall.
