Civil Rights
From East Austin to Hays County down to the West Side of San Antonio, local civil rights and labor rights movements have worked hard to secure progressive policies in our communities. Working Texans have organized to combat discrimination and protect civil rights for all people.
Instead of being strengthened or expanded, the civil rights of Texans are under attack by an unethical and unaccountable majority on the Supreme Court. Texas can do better — after all, it was Texas native President Lyndon Baines Johnson who signed the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and outlawed discrimination on the basis of race, religion, sex, and nationality.
Now, we must do more. I support legislation like the Equality Act to enshrine LGBTQIA+ nondiscrimination protections into law, as well as the Justice for All Act to prohibit discrimination based on sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, or race-related characteristics.
