NEWS: Congressman Greg Casar, Hays County Leaders Celebrate Nearly $1M Federal Investment in Kyle

July 18, 2024

KYLE, Texas – Today, Congressman Greg Casar (D-Texas) joined Kyle and Hays County community leaders to present a $959,752 check for the City’s Reclaimed Water Master Plan, addressing the area’s rapid growth and need for water conservation.

The $959,752 in federal funds earmarked by Casar will be used for installing additional water pumps at the wastewater treatment plant, installing a ground storage tank, and extending existing water lines. These additions will help the City of Kyle access reclaimed water for public use, including subdivisions, park areas, school yards, and other spaces, as well as expand the reclaimed water system from the Plum Creek Golf Course North to Heroes Memorial Park.

“We cannot ignore worse droughts, hotter summers, and fast population growth,” said Congressman Greg Casar (D-Texas). “I’m working to make sure people in Hays County have clean and affordable water for generations to come. By reclaiming water, the City of Kyle is creating a ‘drought-proof’ water system — and I’m proud to support them with this funding.”

Central Texas and the City of Kyle continue to experience rapid population growth, causing an increase in potable water consumption demand and prompting identifying ways to reduce consumption for nonpersonal use. Through the Reclaimed Water Master Plan, Kyle has identified wastewater recycling and reuse as a promising strategy to reduce potable water demands placed upon the existing supply and production facilities.

This federal funding was made possible through the Community Project Funding process for the Fiscal Year 2024 spending bills. The City of Kyle applied for the grant through Casar’s office last year. It was approved in the first round of the appropriations government funding packages that passed the U.S. House on March 6 and signed by President Joe Biden on March 9, 2024.
